Rincon, Puerto Rico
This year’s 2nd winter getaway takes us back to the Caribbean to the colorful, tropical island of Puerto Rico! Puerto Rico is a volcanic island, and part of the Greater Antilles located in the north-central Caribbean between the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic.
The main island of Puerto Rico is only approximately 100 miles long by 35 miles wide, and offers diverse terrestrial and marine ecosystems including coastal mangrove forests, seagrass beds, coral reefs, tropical rain forests, tropical dry forests, and coastal plains!
For our trip we have chosen to escape the bustling, eastern side of Puerto Rico and head to the quieter ‘wild western’ coastal region. The super laid-back surf village of Rincón will be our home away from home!
Rincón is referred to as Pueblo del Surfing (the surfing town) and El Pueblo de lost Bellos Atardeceres (the town of beautiful sunsets)! Not to worry, you do not have to be a surfer to enjoy all that it has to offer!
Rincón is considered a natural and authentic seaside paradise, where emerald hills meet intimate, golden beaches. Rincón is located on a point of land which jets west to a point and meets the Caribbean and Atlantic Oceans, and offers several distinct and intimate beaches. Each day you get to choose the beach which fits your preferred water activities!
One of the coolest qualities of Rincón is that the separation between tourists and locals is more seamless than other resort-type towns. Aside from Rincon’s beautiful beaches, the best part will be socializing with the warm, open, friendly and fun locals!
In fact the locals will be tour guides, showing us the best spots to find relaxation, fun, food, or tropical beverages with fantastic views! We will have a great time utilizing the local entrepreneurs to enrich our trip and experiences!
Rincón became known as one of the world’s top surfing destination in 1968 when the World Surfing Championship was held at Rincon’s own Domes and Maria’s beaches. Generally regarded as one of the best surf spots across the globe, Rincón draws surfers from around the world and is the center of the island’s surf scene. Dubbed the “Caribbean’s Hawaii, or the Hawaii of the Atlantic ” winter waves here can approach 25–30 feet (6.7m) in height, sometimes equaling the force of the surf on Oahu’s north shore!
Rincón is also emerging as a Yoga retreat destination as it offers Yogi-tourists the opportunity to practice on the beach and at open-air studios. Yogi’s can even opt to challenge their practice by participating in group classes on the water with SUP yoga, in the air with Aerial yoga or combine a class with a hike in the hills.
During our trip to Rincón we have planned just enough activities and adventures with a good amount of free time for relaxing or exploring on your own. March is the perfect time to escape winter… and no better place to break free from hibernation than Rincón, Puerto Rico! Whether you prefer calm waters for swimming or waters with awesome surf breaks, Rincón has it all! And, should you tire of beaches you can hop in a car and be up in tropical mountains within minutes! In Rincón you get to choose your own adventure, eat and drink in laid back Caribbean places, and even explore a quaint 240 year old town!

Everyone is welcome to enjoy some or all of the pre-arranged group activities or feel free to explore the beaches and island independently. The trip is yours! For more information on other island activities see ‘Things to Do’ tab on Rincon’s trip home page.
Our Villa’s kitchens will be pre-stocked prior to our arrival with breakfast foods and coffee. Each morning you can roll out of bed and stroll out onto our private deck with a hot cup of Puerto Rican coffee and enjoy breakfast by the sea!
Lunches and dinners will be enjoyed at several of Rincon’s local establishments. Grab an empanada or fresh smoothie at one of the beach-side food stands or enjoy a delicious Caribbean style dinner with views at one of the several close by restaurants!
Day 1; Wednesday, March 9th: AM flight to San Juan (SJU). Group transfers to Rincon around 2:30pm (our drive is about 2.5 hours), check in around 5pm. We’ll have time that evening to check out a local restaurant, grab some provisions, get settled in, and start enjoying our amazing home away from home; right on beautiful Sandy Beach! (Toes in sand – cocktail in hand)
Day 2; Thursday, March 10th: In the morning we’ll head out to Rincon’s own beautiful, protected waters of Tres Palmas Marine Reserve for an amazing two hour paddle/snorkel excursion. Afternoon is free time…. maybe take in a surf lesson or explore other beaches.
Around happy hour we’ll gather and head down to Rincon’s town center plaza and enjoy taking part in their weekly, coveted Art Walk! Rincon’s Art Walk is a great opportunity to mingle with locals and tourists alike and support the local artisans! Hand-made souvenirs can be found at every budget. We’ll stay for dinner and maybe even enjoy some live Latin or Reggae music!
Day 3; Friday, March 11th: Full-day excursion to the amazing turquoise waters of La Parguera. La Parguera is a small, quirky fishing village in the town of Lajas located about an hour south of Rincon.
In La Parguera we will take a boat tour to snorkel and swim around the beautiful mangrove islands and have lunch on our boat. Late afternoon we’ll head back to land for a fresh Caribbean dinner.
Upon sunset the adventure begins again as we head back out to experience the unique and remarkable night time phenomenon of a Phosphorescent Bay! Once in the bay we will swim and snorkel again.
It just so happens we will be there within the new moon cycle which means it is a great time to experience swimming in a Phosphorescent Bay!
Day 4; Saturday, March 12th: Partial free day, with optional trip up into the tropical mountains for hiking to waterfall and swimming. That late afternoon we can gather around happy hour and stroll down the beach to one of Rincon’s best beach-front hot spots. We can enjoy dinner, live music and maybe even dance the night away!

Of the 45 reviews posted, 44 gave the house a 5-star rating! Sample review from 13 people who stayed in Jan 2015:
“Just got back from an amazing week at Rincon. We were a group of 13 adults – couples and singles – and there was plenty of space for everyone… and then some. We’ve traveled to Rincon many times, and this was by far, the nicest place we’ve stayed. The location can’t be beat – right on Sandy Beach, overlooking the beautiful ocean.
The home is within walking distance to many little shops and restaurants, including Tamboo, Kabanas, Pool Bar, Big Kahuna Beach Bar, Rincon Taco, and more. The outdoor space at the house was the best part – there are so many options for relaxing – whether it’s under the thatched roof gazebo, or poolside, or one of the many decks, with options for both sun and shade.
We found the beds to be very comfy and the linens very nice. The kitchens were well stocked – especially the larger downstairs kitchen, which was where we did most of the cooking. We would definitely recommend this property for anyone looking for a place to stay with a large group in Rincon!”
